A New Audited EPD – Stronger Proof of Progress
Sweden, May 12. 2026

Over the past few years, we have steadily worked to reduce our climate footprint step by step — not through one single quick fix, but through a series of tangible improvements across our entire circular value chain. Today, that journey reaches an important milestone: We are releasing a new Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) that confirms a significantly lower CO₂ footprint for our products. It reflects actual improvements in how we produce steel with no mass-balance allocations.

Continuous Improvements

Our journey is based on continuous improvements in our circular value chain. The EPD is proof of our commitment to sustainability. This shows that we as a company invest in technology and technological solutions to find resources that have a positive environmental impact on our products.

We firmly believe that innovation will enable us to serve our customers in the best possible way, with top-class products that are highly efficient and suited to their needs. If we want to remain leaders, we must trust in innovation as we have done so far.

We have been a pioneer in terms of environmental commitment in the steel industry in Europe and are devoted to retaining that position in the future. Among other things, we have increased the recycling rate of our by-products, the utilization rate of hot charging has increased, and a new reporting standard has changed the way of reporting CO gas.

Steel Service has consistently implemented tangible sustainability measures across its operations, including the electrification of its vehicle fleet and the installation of solar panels to secure its own renewable energy supply. These initiatives are part of our long-term strategy to further decarbonize our activities and reduce our dependence on fossil-based energy sources.

This improvement serves as a boost to demonstrate where we are coming from and where we want to go. The passion that has always characterized us has given us the desire to be even greater.

Circular Value Chain

We fully embrace the principles of a sustainable circular economy. Every year, we recycle around 700,000 tonnes of scrap metal, consume 30,000 tonnes of secondary raw materials, and 95% of our by-products are reused or sold.

All our steel products are made from recycled scrap and are 100% recyclable. We continuously develop new applications for our by-products to close the loop, aiming for full circularity.

Our energy system reflects the same philosophy: we use CO gas from neighbouring industries and hydropower from Northern Norway, enabling a fully renewable and circular energy supply. We are also testing recycled drilling oil as an alternative energy source for the rolling mill.

Our Customers

For our customers, this means that you get verified, third-party proof that your materials come with a lower climate impact. The EPD is approved by EPD International, ensuring full transparency.

This is one milestone — not the final goal. Our work continues, and we will keep sharing our progress openly. Our mission is to prove that steel can be a climate-smart building material — and to ensure our customers gain both environmental and competitive advantages by choosing it.

This means that we provide value throughout our entire product and service value chain in an environmentally efficient way all over the Nordic countries.

Transparency

By creating an environmental product declaration for our product, we are accepting industry standards and are able to communicate our environmental performance objectively.

Our brand reputation is essential. An EPD is the most appropriate tool to confirm our credibility and transparency as a company.

We control the entire value chain — from the collection of scrap to melting, casting and delivery of finished products and services. This full traceability gives our customers confidence and eliminates the risk of unwanted or non-compliant materials entering their products.
